The iPad Is Finally Here

After years of hype, Apple has finally introduced its tablet, a product called the iPad. In a nutshell, the iPad is an over glorified iPod Touch that is trying to capture a market that doesn’t yet exist. That market is the category of devices that live in the kitchen or stay on the coffee table. The iPad, however, does do some things that the iPod Touch and the iPhone can’t do.

First of all let me make one thing clear, although it looks like I don’t like the iPad, I do. Even though it isn’t as impressive as I hoped it would be, I still think that is an impressive device that leaves room for improvement in the future. Now, down to business.

First, the good. The main thing that everyone will be concerned about is the price. The iPad is one of those devices that does not have the “Apple Tax” on it. The iPad is offered in both Wifi and Wifi+3G models. The Wifi model starts at $499 for 16 Gigs. It goes up $100 dollars from there. Storage capacity goes up to 64 Gigs for $699. Add $130 dollars to each of the prices for the Wifi+3G version. I believe that these prices are competitive for this type of product. It is more expensive than a netbook/smartphone and yet less expensive than a laptop. The device also sits somewhere in between those two devices as well.

One of the major features of the iPad that Apple touted at their press event was the new iBooks feature that is avaliable on the iPad. This feature was added to put the iPad in direct competition with Amazon’s Kindle. The book prices are are going to be around the same price and the books can be purchased through the iTunes/App/iBooks store. While the iBook app is certainly more flash than the Kindle (you can actually turn the page with your finger, it looks like a real book, has a book shelf, etc.), I would still pick a Kindle. I like the E-Ink screen that the Kindle has. It doesn’t strain my eyes when I’m reading late at night. If I look at a computer screen late at night, however, it strains my eyes and makes it hard to read. I also like the fact that the Kindle has a “free” (included with the cost of the device) no contract lifetime EVDO connection from Sprint. With the iPad however, you have to pay extra to get a 3G connection from AT&T.

Another great thing about the iPad is the amazing Internet browser. It essentially is a large version of Mobile Safari (the browser on the iPhone and the iPod Touch) however the UI has been tweaked a little and it runs faster because the iPad has some more power behind it. Also, because the iPad has a bigger screen, you can see even more of the website, if not all of it, at one time. There is one gaping hole in the middle of Apple’s plan to make this an amazing device. That hole is the fact that the iPad does not support Flash! So now you can forget about going to Hulu, Vimeo, TV.com, JibJab, and any of the other sites on the Internet that use Flash.

The iPad also runs modified versions of the iWork applications as well as all of the iPhone applications that are already on the App Store. Judging from the demos of the iWork apps that they showed at the event, they look amazing. The UI has been completely redone to support multitouch gestures in all apps. For current iPhone Apps, they can either be run in “windowed” or black box mode (runs as would appear on an iPhone screen and has a black box around it on the rest of the screen. They can also be run in full screen mode however you loose some of the visual quality when you blow it up.

Now for the bad. Other than the aforementioned eye strain and lack of Flash support, there is one more major feature left out of the iPad. A camera! This “tablet” would have been an amazing videoconfrencing tool as well as a good, albeit large, camera. Also, in typical Apple fashion, this device also has very limited connectivity. You have to buy an adapter to connect it to pretty much anything under the sun. It does have an accelerometer and a compass, as well as Bluetooth and a 30-pin dock connector.

Other things that aren’t that great about the iPad are still no multitasking, no HDMI out, the touch keyboard (for some), 4:3 instead of 16:9, and the fact that it doesn’t support T-Mobile 3G here in the US.

In conclusion, I have to ask myself the following five questions.

Is it perfect? No.
Does it do everything I want it to do? No.
Is it impressive for a 1st gen product? Yes.
Is it a luxury item? Pretty much, but I don’t think that will stop people from buying it.
Will I buy it? Most likely.

The iPad is a great new device from Apple. Even though some people think that it may not get very far, I think it will. I also believe that we will see some amazing things coming from it whenever it is updated, either through a software update or a hardware refresh.

My Genius Bar Experience

Today, I headed out to the Apple Store in Shadyside to get a problem fixed with my iPhone. The problem with my iPhone was that the ring/silent switch was loose and it was extemely easy to switch the modes. Also, when it was in silent mode, and you shook the phone next to your ear, you could hear something rattling inside. I had a Genius Bar appointment for 3:50, but, of course, I arrived late. If you have ever arrived late for a Genius Bar appointment before, you know that after seven minutes, they take you of of the list and move on to the next customer. When I got to the store, I was greeted by a less then helpful eployee named Chase (I think) who basically said “Screw you for getting here late. There is no possible way that we can squeze you in today.” Eventually, I talked to one store employee (I forget his name) and he took a look at my iPhone, took it over to the Genius, and then brought it back. He and Chase both said that there was something wrong with the phone and they would most likely give me a new one but there was no way that they could do it today. So, I waited a little longer and then talked to another employee named Patrick (this guy is a godsend!). He took a look at my phone and took it over to the Genius yet another time. After that, he went into the “Employees Only” section and came back out with a paper for me to sign and initial and a brand new 16GB White iPhone 3G! All I had to do was sign and initial in a few places and the phone was my new phone! So, if you ever go to the Apple Store in Shadyside, either arrive on time for your Genius Bar appointment or talk to Patrick, he’ll hook you up.

One Big MacWorld Post

Instead of doing one post on each thing that Apple announced at MacWorld (because that would be extremely time consuming on my part),  I figured out that it would be easier for me to just do one big post to tell you my thought without doing a summary of the products.

iLife ‘09

See this post here

iWork ‘09

Even though I don’t have a Mac (I currently use Word) I want the new iWork suite so bad!

First up for iWork, Pages. The new full screen view for pages would really help me when I’m trying to write a paper for school and I have AIM and email open, which always distract me.  Also, the fact that you can use dynamic outlines in Pages is awesome!  I hate making outlines for school whenever you have to write it out and use the correct version of Roman Numerals and things like that.

Next, Keynote!  Let me start out by saying something.  I hate Powerpoint.  I absolutely loathe it.  I would rather clean all of the toilets in Grand Central Station with my tongue then use it but, sadly, I have to.  Using Keynote compared to the piece of software that I will not mention anymore is like the difference between spoiled milk and Belgin dark chocolate.  Keynote has some really awesome new animation tools that I would really like to use in my presentations.  To me, Keynote just makes everything look so much better.  The new text transitions and animations are great.  The new themes are also completely amazing.  Also, Apple now has a app in the AppStore called Keynote Remote that allows users to control their Keynote presentations from their iPhone or iPod Touch for $0.99.

Next, Numbers.  Even though I have never used Numbers myself, it still looks a heck of alot better then Excel.  The fact that Apple has even included themes to use in Numbers is amazing.  Did Microsoft include themes in Excel?  I think not! It would be so easy for me to plan budgets and things in Numbers.

17″ Unibody MacBook Pro

Finally, pro users rejoice!  Apple has finally released the 17″ version of their pro laptop in a unibody design.  I want to have one so bad but, sadly, it is WAY WAY WAY to expensive for me to afford right now.  It has mostly the same features as its 15″ counter part besides the 17″ screen.  The new 17″ MacBook Pro also has a battery that will last 8 hours and has 1,000 recharge cycles. Anyone want to buy me one?

iTunes

Apple also had three announcements about iTunes during the keynote.  One of them was the fact that all of the songs in iTunes will be going DRM-Free (DRM=Digital Rights Management/Copyright Protection) by the end of April! Finally!  Any company that forces DRM on its users should be killed off right away.  There is no point in it.  Another announcement that Apple made was that iTunes was going to have three tiered pricing now.  You can buy songs at $0.69, $0.99, and $1.29.  Phil Schiller that most songs have been going to the $0.69 level then the $1.29 level.  Finally, iPhone 3G users can now download songs right to their device over a 3G network instead of just wifi.

I hope you like my breakdown of the MacWorld San Francisco 2009 Keynote given by Apple’s Senior Vice President of World Wide Product Marketing, Phil Schiller.

iLife '09

During the Apple Keynote given at MacWorld San Francisco 2009 given by Apple’s Senior Vice President of World-Wide Product Marketing, Apple announced the new version of it suite of creative applications called iLife.  The new version of this sweet is called iLife ‘09.  The applications that make up the iLife suite are iWeb, iDVD, iPhoto, iMovie, and Garageband.  All of the applications got an update at the keynote but the ones that Apple really did seem to want to focus on were iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand.

First up, iPhoto.  Apple has added some neat new features to iPhoto, among them, Places and Faces.  Places is a new feature that organizes photos by where they were taken.  For example, say you went on a vacation to Paris, France.  If you have a camera that has a geotagging feature built in, when you import those pictures into iPhoto, it will put on a map (reading from the geotag) exactly where you took that photo!  *HINT* All you iPhone users out there, the iPhone geotags all of your photos that you take with the iPhone camera! *HINT*  Also, if your camera does not support geotagging, you can go in and add places to indivdual photos or whole events if you wanted to do so.

Faces

Faces

Another new feature in iPhoto is called Faces.  What Faces allows you to do pretty much goes with the name.  Faces allows you to organize your photo library by the faces of the people in your lovely photos.  iPhoto will then find pictures that it thinks are the same person and then you can tell iPhoto which ones are and which one isn’t so it gets smarter.  Also, now that iPhoto has built in uploading and syncing with your Facebook albums, the people in your photos that are tagged in iPhoto will also be tagged in Facebook.  Also, if a friend tags someone in a Facebook photo, when iPhoto syncs back with your Facebook account the tag comes with it so then you have that person tagged in your faces.

iPhoto now also supports integration with Facebook and Flickr.  iPhoto also has new themes for travel books that show your pictures along with the geotagging map.  Great for vacations!

Second up, iMovie.  Last year, one of Apple’s engineers asked if he could go through and almost completely redesign iMovie from the ground up.  They let him and some people loved it, and some people hated it.  This version of iMovie pretty Tmuch answers everyone’s complaints about what the previous version of iMovie, iMovie ‘08, lacked.  iMovie ‘09 now has a precision editor, an advanced drag-and-drop interface, dynamic themes, new ways to make cuts, easy to use advanced editing features, and an AMAZING video stabilization system.  iMovie also has a new feature that lets you put animated travel maps into your video.  To explain iMovie in words is just too hard to do.  Even Phil Schiller couldn’t do it so he had the chief architect of iMovie come up and explain it for him.  You can go watch the keynote here to find out more about iMovie.

There was only really one major update to Garageband (why not call it iBand? Who knows…).  Anyhow,  Garageband now has a feature called Learn to Play.  Learn to Play does exactly what you think that it would do.  It teaches you how to play an instrument!  When you purchase iLife ‘09, six basic guitar lessons and six basic piano lessons come with Garageband.  Also, Apple has this new thing that they are calling, don’t quote me on this, the “Learn to Play Store?”  Basically what the store has are more lessons at $4.99 a piece.  These are lessons from artists like Norah Jones and Sting and they teach you how to play their song.

iDVD and iWeb also got some minor updates but  they were not mentioned in the keynote.

I think that the updates to iLife ‘09 are the best updates to the iLife suite so far.  The fact that you can organize your photos by where you took them and by the people in them is wonderful!  I can’t begin to tell you how many times that I wish I could have that feature!  Also, the new automatic stabilization feature in iMovie is amazing.  All you do is click on the clip and say stabilize.  Thats it!  The “Learn to Play Store(?)” in Garage band is also great.  It will be an awesome way for people who have always wanted to be able to play an instrument to learn how to.

My next post about MacWorld will be about the iWork ‘09 suite.

I hope that you have enjoyed my breaking down of iLife ‘09.  What are your thoughts on the new version of iLife?  Leave a comment below to share!

iPhone Version 2.2 Not So Great

Most of you may have heard of the new iPhone/iPod Touch firmware version 2.2. I downloaded it last night an so far, I haven’t liked it (some, not alot).

Podcasts:

The new ability to watch podcasts is great! When it works. Which is rarely. Before everyone jumps on me, yes, I have reset my iPod touch while holding the power and home buttons and turned it on and off mutiple times to see if it would fix the problem. It did not. It gives me one of two errors.

1) This movie could not be played.
2) This movie format is not supported.

You can view photos of the errors at the bottom of the post. I can’t insert them online because I am editing on Wordpress for iPhone. Correct me if I am wrong.

Wake up Apple!
One, why can’t the movie play? Two, don’t list them in the podcast directory if the file format is not supported.

UPDATE: This post was saved as a draft in my iPod touch while I went to check on this podcast problem. It seems like only smaller podcasts are affected.

So far, only video podcasts have this problem from what I have seen.

Safari:

I hate the new design. Enough said. Does not crash as much.

Maps:

Seems fine. Haven’t really seen Google Street View on their yet.

UPDATE: As I only have an iPod touch, Google Street View was not included in my update.

There is some more stuff that I don’t like but that was enough Apple bashing for now.

This makes me think….

I read an essay recently that really made me think about what it told me.  The link can be found below if you want to read it yourself.  It basically said that people think that ideas for startup companies will just pop into your head or they won’t.  That is not true.  Just read the essay yourself and you will see what I mean.

Hope this makes you think!
